Step-Up for Life is a non-profit organisation that believes, like Nelson Mandela, that “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world”.
We are specifically passionate about educating the youth in social responsibility.
South Africa is a country of many contrasts. From the first class suburbs to the poverty stricken townships, our youth suffer great divides in their access to opportunities, and their sense of self-worth. Many young people in disadvantaged communities suffer from feelings of hopelessness and low self-esteem. Handcuffed to the script written for them by the legacy of apartheid, they succumb to various societal ills, and are not encouraged to seek alternative methods of changing their situations.
Furthermore, those youth from privileged backgrounds are protected from the struggles of the disadvantaged and many are not aware of the information to be shared, the beneficial role they can play in social upliftment, and the friendships to be made by connecting with youth across social borders.
Via our programmes, workshops and community integration, we seek to nurture a socially responsible youth, one that is actively engaged in the promotion of voluntarism to those in need. Our efforts aim at providing our learners with positive opportunities to engender community pride, enable them with the knowledge and skills to be leaders motivating for social change, and thereby promote the belief that they too are capable of a worthy contribution to the world.
By linking youths across social and geographical boundaries, we aspire to expose them to a previously unlikely educational and networking platform upon which to build social cohesion, develop social capital, and promote social dialogue.
Our dream is that the socially responsible youth, connected through social networks, will ultimately grow into a friendlier, more empathetic world community.
